Do Syracuse Fans Have To Like Mike?

After one preseason game, former Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams is being compared to Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall.

His transition from NFL Draft day disaster to full-time starter is extremely impressive.  His critics seem stupid and his supporters look brilliant.  But am I really supposed to cheer for this guy?

It’s the epidemic of “From?!”  When Dwight Freeney gets a sack, Marvin Harrison catches a touchdown, or Donovan McNabb has a great scramble, we yell that word blindly in the air.  The response emboldens our Alma Mater, and in a weird way ourselves.  But is Williams worth even that one word?

The dude quit.  He walked off on the team.  I wasn’t in the huddle, I didn’t stand shoulder to shoulder with the man during training camp, but come on.  And now – now that he’s decided to go all out in the NFL – now I’m supposed to hold him in high regard.  Nah, not falling for it.

So the next time Mike Williams makes an unreal catch and some drunken fool yells “From?!” I’ll be yelling back SUNY ESF.
