Marquette Is The Mile Marker On Dion Waiters’ Redemption Road

By Zach Lowe

As the clock read 0.0, the fans in Milwaukee went wild. Final score: Marquette 76, Syracuse 70.  It was January 29, 2011. Syracuse was hitting bottom as the reality of a four game losing streak sank in.  Syracuse Kris Joseph walked dejectedly off the court. Scoop Jardine had his patented look of confusion meets frustration.  As the sweat poured off of them, as well as Brandon Triche, Rick Jackson and CJ Fair who had been on the floor as the buzzer sounded, one Syracuse player was bone dry – Dion Waiters. Some Thoughts On The #1 Syracuse Orange’s Win At N.C. State

By Zach Lowe

This weekend, the wife, a couple of my fellow OA.com writers and I made the 4.5 hour trip from D.C. to Raleigh to witness Syracuse’s first true road game in a century (or something like that).  Some thoughts on our Orange odyssey…

  • NC State fans were relatively polite, as if they really haven’t been good in a long time and know it. A very self-aware bunch.  Never the less, I was impressed with how loud the building got when they pulled out in front midway through the first half and then tied it back up in the second.   Read more »

Time For A Deep Breath On Doug Marrone

By Tim Schlittner

Allow me to start by acknowledging a few facts:

1)      The 2011 season was a disappointment.

2)      Finishing in last place in football in the Big East is never acceptable.

3)      The final five games ranged from sloppy to disastrous.

4)      Doug Marrone is responsible for the performance of his team.

No one, not even the biggest Marrone fan, can excuse the way the Orange performed down the stretch.  The defense was miserable.  The offense was shaky.  Special teams, as usual, were anything but special.  Syracuse’s final five losses all came to teams that failed to win this year’s Big East.  The fact that this collapse followed a drubbing of eventual conference champion West Virginia leaves me all the more flabbergasted. Excuses, Excuses

By Dave Cooperman

“I’m not wrong on a lot of things, especially when it comes to the team. I truly believe that. I think I have a good sense of the team. I talked about it early in the year. I don’t know if you remember, but I talked about this year being a transitional year. And I kept saying that. So, right off the bat I was worried.”

-Doug Marrone

Huh? This was the best that Doug Marrone could come up with following the final turnover, penalty and disappointment-filled finale at Pittsburgh? A finale that snapped the Orange bowl streak at one and capped a season that somehow looks and definitely feels worse than the 5-7 record. Read more »

By Saying Boeheim Doesn’t Get It, Pat Forde Shows He Doesn’t Get It

By Zach Lowe

Following last night’s much anticipated Jim Boeheim press conference, Yahoo! sports columnist Pat Forde once again took to the web to write about the still-unfolding Bernie Fine saga.  After reading it, I was left scratching my head. A Missouri grad, maybe he’s envious of our superior journalism school.  Tellingly, a couple years back, he left Syracuse and its intense basketball rivalry with Georgetown off his hottest college basketball rivalry list (the season after a classic 98-94 OT game at the Carrier Dome) in favor of Seton Hall-Rutgers. Maybe he just doesn’t like Syracuse. Read more »

Boeheim Should NOT Be Fired…And Other Thoughts

By Zach Lowe

A devastating day.  ESPN Outside the Lines aired the audiotape conversation between Bernie Fine’s wife, Laurie, and his accuser, Bobby Davis.  A third accuser emerged. Bernie Fine was fired. Some started the clock on when Jim Boeheim would join him. Boeheim releases a well-worded statement agreeing with the decision to fire Bernie and apologizing for his initial comments.

The twists are coming faster than I can type. As I have previously written here, this entire situation hits close to home. My thoughts are like marbles spilt onto a hardwood floor – unbearably loud and impossible to corral. So as I work to gather them, here are some thoughts on this awful day… Read more »

The End Is Near For Doug Marrone

By Dave Cooperman

Four more quarters, 60 more minutes, countless more mistakes, thousands more fans turned off and then mercifully it will all be over.  The Syracuse football season – heading towards an inevitable 5-7 conclusion, reeking of failure and embarrassment, letting down anyone who had even a glimmer of hope back in August that this program would build on a bowl win.  That will not happen now because quite simply the wrong coach is at the helm yet again.

The end is near for Doug Marrone.  No, it won’t be this offseason and to be fair that would be a year too soon.  Most coaches at the collegiate ranks deserve their four years and Marrone is no different.  Next season Doc Gross will need to make what should be an easy call – extension or termination.  Nobody expects a coach to recruit with lame duck status hanging around his neck so Gross will be forced to make a mercy kill for the second time in his very shaky tenure as Athletic Director. When You Write, Get It Right

By Zach Lowe
.
The allegations against Syracuse assistant basketball coach, Bernie Fine, have been leveled.  Statements from the University, the head coach, and the accused have been made in response.  The investigation is underway.  It will be a while before it is over.
.
With such serious and disturbing allegations made against Fine, the situation is certainly deserving of the attention it is receiving.  And as the dark cloud of the Penn State sex abuse scandal hovers over college sports, it is to be expected that commentators and pundits will compare the two situations.  But given the uncertainty of the allegations against Fine, I would just hope media proceed with extreme caution.

Some Personal Thoughts On Bernie Fine

By Zach Lowe
.
Despite being a Twitter fiend, I first heard of the allegations against Bernie Fine via text.  Before my stomach had finished sinking, I was logged on to Twitter watching the tweets fall one after the other – all saying the same thing:
.
“Syracuse police investigating allegation that Syracuse asst Bernie Fine molested former ball boy”
.
Total and utter shock.  Shock that this was happening now. Shock that this was happening to my school. Shock at the fact that this was alleged at Bernie.
.
This isn’t just surreal because it’s Syracuse.  During my four years there, I knew Bernie Fine personally. He was the faculty advisory of my fraternity. And as a fraternity leader, I was in frequent contact with him. We spoke a couple times per week. I spent time in his office on South Campus.

Redshirt Cooney

By Zach Lowe

All summer and into fall, Syracuse basketball fans have been giddy about the talent that would suit up for the Orange this season. The bulk of last year’s squad was returning and would be supplemented by three stand-out freshman: Michael Carter-Williams, Rakeem Christmas and Trevor Cooney.  It soon became apparent that Jim Boeheim was going to have a “good” problem – too much talent, especially in the back court.  Syracuse returns its incredibly solid backcourt, led by Naismith candidate Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche. They will be backed up by a refocused Dion Waiters and MCW, the McDonald’s All-American. And then there’s Cooney, the 65th best recruit according to ESPN. Read more »
